Power Rankings in all sports seem to be based on writer opinion, Win/Loss records, and clever little blurbs referring to the ranking position. Well, the team over at Faceoff-Factor has created a fantastic formula for hardcore hockey fans that breaks down the key statistics of team play calculated into games played. Sort of a "Team DNA" let's call it. These power rankings are based on the teams actual games played and not just a snapshot ranking of how a team performed that week. Sometimes teams have 2-3 games in hand. These rankings are true to only the games played per team. The ranking calculates everything from goal differential to faceoff percentage.

Faceoff-Factor plans on releasing it's Exclusive power rankings bi-weekly. If you are a hockey fan and not a follower of the factor you should definitely check them out at Faceoff-Factor.com

Here’s how it is explained with example.

(Goal Difference + PP% + PK% + Faceoff%)
(Divided by Games Played)

Here's how those stats would appear.

#8 -New York Rangers
W L OT Pts G/G GA/G G Dif PP% PK% FO% Rate
17 8 2 36 2.44 2.37 .07 .15 .90 .50 43.58

The statistical analysis confirms what many experts believe to be true about NY, weak schedule, more games played, and a bad offense.

What these numbers show is something that fans of the Rangers should be concerned about. They're barely winning games with their league best PK% and that's due to a weak offense... again. Their 2.44 goals per game is 26th in the NHL so at some point, they will either have to start to score goals on the PP or those lucky bounces will start going in behind King Henry.
