Steelers Bar Action during AFC Championship Game

Sunday January 25, 2009
From McFaddens Bar on the North Shore-Pittsburgh
By Frank Murgia

--

This a video compilation I put together from my little Flip Video Camera last Sunday at McFaddens bar outside of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh for the AFC championship game.

It is marginal quality and sometimes shaky but you get the feel of the packed Steelers Nation in the bar.

This group of mug shots of people wearing Obama Apparel is, well, I don't know what to say. I guess in these new times you have to watch how you say things in reference to our new leader. I find this funny and bizarre and sad all at the same time. Click Photo below to see larger view at the site that brought these photos to life. Gunbroker.com

The Terrible History Of Undersized Linens

Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury celebrates as the first star of his team's shutout of New York today. Foreshadowing? Or pride before the fall?

It's probably worth nothing that the "Terrible Towel" is actually a trademark, originally coined by long-time "voice of the Steelers" Myron Cope, who sold the rights to a Pennsylvania school for disabled people. So they are the ones getting rich off the annoyance of others—including the NFL, which is annoyed that are not making money off it themselves. Rumor has it—which I can't link to because it's stupidly behind a paywall—that the NFL wants to market the towel idea to every NFL city, even though several have already tried it in the past and failed miserably. (The Titans fans' blue hankies did not help them so much this year.)

Again, the moral of this story is that Pittsburgh is a team of destiny. Or today's game will be rigged in Baltimore's favor in order to keep the Steelers in their place. Either outcome seems highly probable.

Steelers Fight Songs. Polka, Polamalu. Here We Go, Pop Rocks

January 16, 2009

---

The Pittsburgh Steelers and its nation are famous for the terrible towel and its fight songs. The original by Jimmy Pol is based on the Pittsburgh Polka song. There have been many new additions but the polka is the best and the originator of football fight songs. Another recently famous Steelers song is not so much a fight song but a humorous take on the Muppet's "Ma-nama-Na" song. Based on Steelers All-Pro Safety Troy Polamalu. Very cute and funny and damn catchy. it sticks in your head all day. Both videos are posted here below as well as "Here We Go" which has become the newly most recognizable Steelers song the past ten years. Enjoy!

The Heart Attack Grill is a fast food hamburger restaurant in Arizona, USA. It has courted controversy by serving unashamedly high calorie menu items with controversial names. Its waitresses ("nurses") take orders ("prescriptions") from the customers ("patients"). A tag is put on the patient's wrist showing which foods they ordered and a "doctor" examines the "patients" with a stethoscope.

Saying good bye to Ricardo Montalban

We’ve lost a lot greats as of late.

The most recent was the smooth-voiced Mexican actor Ricardo Montalban who died Wednesday at age 88.

See the Los Angeles Times for his full obit.

Montalban played many an iconic role in his career from Mr. Roarke on ABC’s “Fantasy Island” to Khan Noonian Singh in the ” Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

In the 1970s, he was the spokesman for Chrysler Cordoba. The words “Corinthian leather” never sounded so good as when emoted by Montalban.

He will be missed but not forgotten.
